D-mannose is a type of sugar that's related to glucose. But it has a lower glycemic index than glucose. It is commonly found in fruits, like Cranberries. However, it also occurs naturally in the human body.
It works by hindering bacteria adhesion to the urothelium. In simpler terms, It works by attaching to the E. coli bacteria, which is the most common UTI-causing bacteria. This causes the bacteria to be eliminated from the body when you go to the bathroom.
Cranberry is believed to be an effective preventive strategy for UTI symptoms. It works by inhibiting the growth and colonization of bacteria in your urinary tract. Cranberries contain A-type proanthocyanins that can prevent E-coli from sticking to the bladder's walls and surviving. This creates an inhospitable environment for UTI-causing bacteria.
Vitamin C is also highly beneficial for cystitis treatment at home. This is because vitamin C makes urine more acidic. The acid creates an inhabitable environment for UTI causing bacteria.
